Recently, the business case became clear. Research has found that in the USA, meaningful work is THE most important aspect of a job, ahead of income, job security, and the number of hours worked. When professionals find their work to be meaningful, their performance improves by 33 percent, they are 75 percent more committed to their organization, and are 49 percent less likely to leave.
Despite the positive effects for individuals and businesses, only 50 percent of employees find meaning in their work today. When employees lack purpose in their work, they disengage. When they disengage everyone suffers. For the employee, lack of meaning creates adverse effects on their mental health and overall well-being. For the company, productivity suffers. Last year, the costs when employees were not engaged was $7.8 trillion globally.
